SYLVIA NAGGINDA, THE NNABAGEREKA OF BUGANDA


Sylvia Nagginda, The Nnabagereka of the Buganda Kingdom was born in the United Kingdom, raised in Uganda and lived in the U.S. for 18 years before returning to Uganda to take up her role as Queen of Buganda. Whilst living in the U.S. A. she earned her Associates Degree with Honours from City University of New York, a Bachelor of Arts degree from New York University and a Master of Arts degree, with Distinction, from New York Institute of Technology. Her major field of study was Public Relations, including economics, journalism and corporate communications. The Nnabagereka previously worked at U.N. headquarters in New York as well as a various management consulting and communications firms in the U.S.

Sylvia and the Kabaka had known each other for a number of years, but their romance blossomed in 1998, leading to the announcement of their engagement on Valentines’ Day February 14, 1999. On that day, Kabaka Mutebi formally introduced Sylvia to members of his family and the Katikkiro. On March 14th, the Katikkiro led a 20-person delegation to Sylvia's family to pay their respects on behalf of the Kabaka. On March 15, 1999; the Katikkiro, during a historic sitting of the Lukiiko at Mmengo, formally informed the whole of Buganda about the forthcoming marriage.
On August 27, 1999 Sylvia Nagginda, married Kabaka Mutebi II in a historical ceremony at St. Paul's Cathedral, Namirembe.

Her Royal Highness Nnabagereka Sylvia Nagginda married the Kabaka (King) of Buganda, Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, the traditional and cultural leader of the almost 7 million Baganda people living in Uganda.


Since becoming Queen in 1999, The Nnabagereka has been active in public health and development activities in the Buganda Kingdom and across Uganda. She runs the Nnabagereka Development Trust Foundation and is the patron of various organizations.
